1. Agreement to these terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are an agreement between you and Khalsen (“Khalsen”, “we”, “us” or “our”). They apply when you use the Khalsen mobile app, the khalsen.com website, and any page we show for links shared from the app (together, the “Service”).
By creating an account, joining a group, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.
2. Words we use
- Group: a shared space in the app for a trip, home, outing or any set of people who split costs.
- Bill: an expense recorded in the app, including who paid, how it’s split, and any items or receipt photos.
- Balance: the amount one person owes another, worked out from the bills and payments recorded.
- Payment: a record that one person has paid another back. Recording it doesn’t move any money.
- Guest: a person added to a group by name, without a Khalsen account.
- Your content: everything you add to the Service, such as groups, bills, notes, names and photos.
3. Who can use Khalsen
You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you’re under the age of legal majority where you live, you may use the Service only with the involvement of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these Terms on your behalf. You may not use the Service if you’ve been barred from it before.
4. Your account
- Give accurate information when you sign up, and keep it up to date.
- Keep your sign-in details private. You’re responsible for everything that happens under your account.
- Tell us straight away through the contact page if you think someone else has accessed your account.
- One person, one account. Don’t create accounts for other people or pretend to be someone else.
5. What Khalsen is, and isn’t
Khalsen is a tool for recording shared expenses and working out who owes whom. Khalsen is not a bank, a payment service, a wallet or a lender. We don’t hold, send, receive or guarantee any money.
When you pay someone by InstaPay, cash, bank transfer or any other way, that payment happens entirely outside Khalsen and is governed by the terms of whoever provides it. Opening an InstaPay link from the app simply takes you to InstaPay. Marking a payment in Khalsen only records that it happened; it doesn’t confirm or guarantee that money was received.
6. Groups, guests and invitations
- Creating a group. The person who creates a group can name it, invite people, and manage its settings. Everyone in a group can add bills and record payments in it.
- Adding guests. When you add a guest, you confirm that the person is happy to be included and that the name you use for them is appropriate.
- Invitations. Anyone with a group’s invite link can ask to join it. Share invite links only with people you want in the group.
- Leaving a group. If you leave or are removed from a group, the bills you were part of stay in the group so the other members’ balances remain correct.
- Respect. A group is shared. Don’t edit or delete other members’ bills without a good reason, and don’t use a group to pressure or embarrass anyone.
7. Bills, balances and payments
- Based on what’s entered. Balances are calculated from the bills and payments that you and the other members record. If something is entered wrongly, the balances will be wrong too.
- Rounding. Amounts are calculated to the smallest unit of the currency (for example, the piaster). When a bill can’t be divided exactly, small differences are shared out so the total always adds up.
- Suggested payments. Khalsen may suggest a simpler way to settle up, with fewer payments between people. These are suggestions only; you decide how to pay.
- Currencies. Bills can be recorded in different currencies. Khalsen doesn’t provide official exchange rates or convert money.
- Disagreements. Any disagreement about who owes what is between the people involved. Khalsen isn’t a party to it, though we’re happy to help you understand what the app shows.
8. Receipt reading and other automatic features
Some features work automatically, such as reading the items on a receipt photo and suggesting a bill’s category. These features are provided to save you time, but they can make mistakes, especially with blurry, folded or handwritten receipts. Always check items, quantities and amounts before saving a bill or paying anyone. We may limit how often automatic features can be used, for example the number of receipts you can scan each month.
9. Shared links
You can share a link to an invitation or a bill. Anyone who has a shared link can open it, even without the app. A bill link shows that bill’s details and the display names of the people in it. You’re responsible for who you share links with. Don’t share a link to a bill that includes other people if they wouldn’t want it shared.
10. Your content
You keep ownership of your content. By adding it to the Service, you give Khalsen a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, copy, process and display it, only as needed to run the Service for you and the people you share it with, and only for as long as it’s in the Service.
You’re responsible for your content and confirm that you have the right to add it. Don’t add other people’s private information, such as phone numbers or photos, without their permission.
11. Acceptable use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- break any law, or record money connected to illegal activity, fraud or money laundering;
- harass, threaten, bully, shame or impersonate anyone;
- add content that is offensive, hateful, sexual, or that infringes someone else’s rights;
- send spam, or misuse invite links or notifications;
- access accounts, groups or data that aren’t yours, or try to get around security or usage limits;
- interfere with, overload or disrupt the Service, or use bots or automated tools to access it;
- copy, scrape, sell or resell the Service, or reverse-engineer it, except where the law clearly allows this.
12. Feedback
We welcome ideas and suggestions. If you send us feedback, we may use it to improve Khalsen without any obligation to you.
13. Our intellectual property
The Service, including its design, text, graphics, the Khalsen name, logo and the خالصين stamp, belongs to Khalsen and is protected by law. These Terms don’t give you any right to use our name or branding. You may use the app for your own personal, non-commercial use as allowed by these Terms.
14. Other services
The Service may link to or work alongside services we don’t control, such as InstaPay, app stores, and the sign-in options on your phone. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies, and we’re not responsible for them.
15. Fees
If we ever introduce paid features, we’ll show the price clearly before you pay, and we won’t charge you for anything without your agreement. Payments made through an app store are subject to that store’s terms.
16. Availability, updates and offline use
We work to keep the Service running smoothly, but we can’t promise it will always be available, uninterrupted or free of errors. We may update, change or remove features, and we may need to pause the Service for maintenance. When you use the app offline, your changes are saved on your phone and sent when you’re back online; if a phone is lost or the app is removed before it syncs, those unsynced changes may be lost.
17. Suspension and ending your use
You can stop using the Service at any time, and you can delete your account yourself in the app, from Profile → Delete account. Deleting it closes the account straight away; we keep your information for 90 days and then delete it permanently, as described in our Privacy Policy. We may suspend or close an account, or remove content, if it breaks these Terms, puts other users at risk, or if the law requires it. Where reasonable, we’ll tell you why and give you a chance to respond. Sections that by their nature should continue after your use ends, such as sections 10, 13 and 18 to 23, will continue to apply.
18. Disclaimer
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including that the Service will meet your needs, or that calculations based on information users enter will be correct.
19. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Khalsen won’t be liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for loss of money, data or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. This includes losses caused by payments between users, information users enter, mistakes in automatic features such as receipt reading, or the loss of unsynced changes. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that can’t be limited under applicable law.
20. Responsibility for misuse
If you break these Terms or the law while using the Service, and this leads to a claim against Khalsen, you agree to be responsible for the reasonable losses and costs that result, to the extent the law allows.
21. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we’ll change the date at the top of this page. If the changes are significant, we’ll let you know in the app before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after changes take effect, you accept the updated Terms.
22. General
- These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and Khalsen about the Service.
- If any part of these Terms can’t be enforced, the rest stays in effect.
- If we don’t enforce a right straight away, we haven’t given it up.
- You may not transfer your rights under these Terms to anyone else. We may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
- These Terms are available in English and Arabic, and both versions have the same meaning.
